Carer support services

Carers are people who care for and support relatives or friends who are frail or have physical/mental illness or disability, or are affected by substance misuse.

What is a carer?

Carers not only look after friends or relatives with mental and physical illness or disability but also those affected by HIV/Aids. Increasingly, children are also taking on caring responsibilities.

Many carers do not see themselves as carers – they view their role as that of a parent, spouse or partner, son or daughter, relative, friend or neighbour caring for a loved one or friend. As a result, they often miss out on services, support, advice and benefits available.

What support is available for carers?

The three Carers Support Service organisations in West Sussex provide:

  • information
  • advice/advocacy
  • emotional support
  • carers' meetings
  • events
  • workshops.
